Print of an early 20th Century panel from the Hizam (or Belt) of the Ka'bah (Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The panel was originally made from black and green-colored silk, and the verses of the Quran are embroidered with gold and silver thread and strips of flattened gold and silver wire, over padding. This is one of eight panels that form the hizam (‘belt’), an inscribed band that encircles the upper part of the Ka‘bah. It is embroidered with verses 95-97 from surah Al ‘Imran (III). The text refers to ‘the religion of Abraham’, ‘the first house of worship that was in Mecca’ and ‘the Station of Abraham’.
Quran 3:95-97:
Say, "Allah has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists." (95)
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.(96)
In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e. the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.(97)
