Print of Rembrandt's recreation of a Mughal miniature. The scene shows four Mughal elders seated under a tree (Sheikh Husain Jami, Sheikh Husain Ajmeri, Sheikh Muhammad Mazandarani, and Sheikh Miyan Mir); bearded old men wearing turbans, in a half-circle on a terrace, one holding a cup, the other a book, a steep rocky outcrop behind. c.1656-1661.
Sketched with pen and brown ink with brown and grey wash, touched with white and with some scraping-out, on Asian paper prepared with pale brown wash. Rembrandt's famous painting 'Abraham and the Angels' was inspired by the design he copied here.
