About
Print of a 1775 painting by a European Jesuit artist at the Chinese court of Uyghur General Khojis, governor of Turfan, who later settled in Beijing. Early local chronicles and oral histories often portray Khojis as a pragmatic leader who chose to cooperate with the Qing to protect Uyghur Muslims from destruction during the Dzungar wars, which were brutal and devastated much of the region. However, later Uyghur nationalists and reformist Muslim thinkers view his alliance with the Qing as the beginning of Uyghur subjugation even if his intentions were practical or protective at the time.
